In this week’s member spotlight, we’re featuring Karen Mertes. She’s not just a member though, nope. Karen is also the Founder and President of Fulfill Your Destiny, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that Charity Chics has supported many times over the years. Let’s jump right in to Karen’s spotlight!
What’s your business? Fulfill Your Destiny, Inc.
What do you do in your business? As the Founder & President of Fulfill Your Destiny, Inc., I turned a life-altering tragedy into a life purpose with my organization, Fulfill Your Destiny, awarding ‘Business Builder Grants’ to entrepreneurs that have experienced life-changing events and desire to take their businesses to the next level. I’m a Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) from our United States Air Force, a highly regarded Professional Motivational Speaker; Award Winning, #1 Amazon Best Selling Author of Plainitff 101; and Certified Entrepreneur, Leadership and Business Consultant all to benefit Fulfill Your Destiny. I’m also the creator of the annual signature event, Fulfill Your Destiny’s Spring Chari-Tea held each year in March.
How long have you been working in your business? Since Sept, 2010. In 2007, my car was struck by a drunk driver traveling over 100 mph on the interstate resulting in me suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Facing the consequences of this life-changing injury, this would be the genesis which led me to create Fulfill Your Destiny. I use an entrepreneurial model to advance my 501(c)3 non-profit organization, raising money for Fulfill Your Destiny in several different and unique ways, including offering professional services or products for donation. I’m told I’ve inspired thousands across our country with my remarkable story of survival with a TBI. I made a promise that if I was fortunate to survive, I’d spend the rest of my life helping others. Everyday I continue to keep my promise, helping others fulfill their destinies. Many inspiring stories of people Fulfill Your Destiny has helped can be found here.
Why do you love Charity Chics? I’ve been a member and strong supporter of Charity Chics for over seven years. I cherish the relationships and bonds I’ve made with many of the women. Along with doing business together, many of us have become very good friends. Charity Chics get together once a month and help other local charities in the process yet our friendships have grown far beyond these ‘official’ networking meetings or activities.
What is your favorite way to give back? Both time and money
Why do you think people should be charitable? Similar to how our bodies need exercise for peak performance, our souls need philanthropy. Donating our time, talents, treasure or any combinations of these makes our hearts happy!
What is your favorite quote? “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain
Is there anything you want to add that others might not know? In my spare time, I enjoy attending and supporting arts & crafts festivals. I also enjoy spending time outside in nature, taking long walks, and traveling.
How awesome is Karen?
I’m sure it’s no surprise to you we just adore Karen Mertes. She is an amazing inspiration to us, and such a loving spirit. And how perfectly fitting is that Mark Twain quote she mentioned? It is our sincere hope that each of you find out why you were born soon, if you haven’t already!
